Caledonia Baseball Softball League

Step by Step CBSL Coaching

Thank you for your interest in coaching with Caledonia Baseball Softball League this season. Because of people like you, we are able to have a league of over 700 ball players, and help so many kids learn the love and skills of this sport!

We sincerely appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time and talent, and hope to support you throughout each step of the process.  However, before we're able to assign coaches, we need interested volunteers to complete the following steps:

  • Submit email approval for a background check. This process is administered through Little League International by a third party - J.D. Palatine (JDP).  If you do not receive your background check email, please check your junk/spam folder. The JDP background check email has a short expiration window, so please look for it and fill it out ASAP.

  • Complete a CDC Concussion Training
    • If you have completed this training in the past 3 years, please upload your certification to your volunteer profile on the CBSL website. To download your certificate, log into the CDC website, go to Your Learning, Your Certificates.
    • If you have not completed this training in the past 3 years, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/youthsports/training/index.html, , complete the 30 minute training, download your certification and upload it to your volunteer profile on the CBSL website.
  • Complete a SafeSport Abuse Awareness for Adults Training
  • In addition to this online training, Coaches and Assistance Coaches will be asked to attend the following in-person events:
    • Annual Coaches and Umpire Meeting: Thursday, March 14th at Kraft Meadows Intermediate School at 7:00pm
    • Annual Coaches and Umpire Clinic: Saturday, March 23rd at Kraft Meadows Intermediate School at 8:00am
We want all CBSL participants, especially our youth and volunteer Coaches, to feel safe and empowered. To support CBSL Coaches, we will provide written support in the following areas:
  • Player Skills by Division
  • Suggested Practice Ideas, with support videos
  • Rules per Division
  • Video Resource Library
With the above training, provide resources, and our volunteers hard work - we are sure to have a successful season. That said, we need to remind everyone of our Zero Tolerance Policy, which can be found below.

Coaches, please send any and all questions and concerns  to [email protected]. And know, we are so grateful for you!

Zero Tolerance Policy

Caledonia Baseball Softball League (Caledonia Little League) herein “CBSL” will impose a Zero Tolerance Policy that will be applied to all players, parents, managers, and coaches that display disrespect toward on-field umpires, players, coaches, parents, board members or other league volunteers.

To curb abuses, umpires will penalize team coaches, players, and parents whom, through verbal communications or physical gestures, make an obvious attempt to:

  • Intimidate or disrespect an Umpire, Parent, Manager, Coach/Assistant Coach, Board Member, or Volunteer.
  • Challenge the authority or competence of an Umpire, Manager, Coach/Assistant Coach, Board Member, or Volunteer.
  • Incite, provoke, or initiate any verbal or physical abuse of an Umpire, Parent, Manager, Coach/Assistant Coach, Board Member, or Volunteer.

Make comments/profanity and/or gestures intended to be personal in nature to a Player, Umpire, Coach/Assistant Coach, Manager, Parent, Board Member, or Volunteer.

If the zero-tolerance policy is violated, the on-field umpires or any member of the Board of Directors of CBSL will stop the game immediately. The offending person will be asked to leave the field area and/or facility.  Failure of the offending person to leave the field area in a timely manner may result in the game being forfeited and/or suspension of the offending party from the next scheduled game along with additional penalties as determined by the league board of directors.

Any time a Player, Parent, Manager or Coach/Assistant Coach has violated the zero-tolerance policy a report shall be filed with the Board of Directors, as deemed necessary, and may require subsequent disciplinary action.  Our umpires and members of the Board of Directors are required to conduct themselves in a professional, sportsmanlike, impartial, and constructive manner at all times.  The actions/decisions of an umpire must be above reproach. Actions such as baiting or inciting players, parents, and coaches are strictly prohibited. Players, coaches, and parents can do their part by learning to respect the umpire’s decisions.  It is important that everyone refrain from using language, gestures, or name-calling directed at umpires, opponents, players, coaches and even spectators.

At no time shall a manager, coach/assistant or substitute object to an umpire’s judgment decision.  Judgment decisions include, but are not limited to, those where a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out.  For purposes of instruction/education only, if a manager wishes to discuss a call with an umpire, he must do so alongside the opposing team’s manager with the understanding that the umpire's decision is final.  Repeated or unnecessary challenges will be deemed as unsportsmanlike and will be subject to disciplinary actions as determined by the league's board of directors. At no time and under no circumstance shall a "non-manager" (coach/assistant coach, parent, player, or fan) be allowed to meet with or challenge a call with an umpire.  Failure to abide by this policy may result in removal of the offending party and manager along with additional as determined by the league board.

If you have a problem with an official’s attitude or action, it is advised that you do not take matters into your own hands. You should file a complaint with a member of the board of directors by way of its coaches coordinator.  All complaints will be reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken as deemed necessary.

Additionally, CBSL will impose a Zero Tolerance policy that will be applied to all players, family members of players, coaches/managers, umpires, volunteers, board members and volunteers that engage in drinking, smoking, any other form of substance abuse either directly before, during or after while on the premises of CBSL activities.  Any suspect party, either by action, word, or physical condition, will be asked to leave the premises immediately, and authorities may be called. In the case of alcohol or other possible drug use, players will not be released to suspect family members if they are their only means of transportation. A report shall be filed with the Board of Directors and subsequent disciplinary action, including release or suspension of player, family member, coach, umpire, volunteer, or board member, may be incurred.

It is understood that failure to comply with the terms herein may result in removal, suspension and/or league expulsion of the offending party, with or without warning.  By signing this statement and for consideration for approval by our Board of Directors, all Volunteers, Managers, and Coaches/Assistant Coaches acknowledge their understanding and agreement and hereby agree to the terms of this policy.
